What Is The Best Wiki Software Solution?

February 7, 2010 by Phil

For a wiki that is going to contain a high content volume, experience high traffic and intended for long-term use.
What’s the best wiki solution in terms of hosting, language basis (Java, PHP, Ruby..etc) and cost?
Also, should I consider the hosted wiki like wikicities or pay for a hosting server?

If it is high content wiki, then it is definitly you go for payed hosting, since it is more reliable and ad free. MediaWiki has proven to good for large sites like wikipedia. For a list of other wikis available check thishttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_…

Since MediaWiki is used to run Wikipedia, by far the largest wiki, it is evident that this software is highly scalable and can be used for a high traffic site. MediaWiki is open source, mostly written in PHP, and can be downloaded from http://mediawiki.org
If the topic of your wiki is something that will attract a large community, and you are happy for ads to pay for the hosting, you can make a free wiki at http://wikia.com (formerly Wikicities). The advantage to that over hosting it yourself is that it’s free, and you won’t need to worry about the technical issues of installing the software or maintaining a server. It also means you’re not solely responsible for maintaining the wiki, so if you get bored of it, you can leave, but the community itself can continue. Users of the wiki will also benefit from being part of a wider wiki community, where users of other Wikia sites, and also Wikia staff (including myself), can help if the wiki runs into problems (especially with spam or vandalism).
